Down to Earth Farm has a small flock of pastured dairy sheep and laying hens. They strive to keep the sheep on pasture year-round but do supplement with alfalfa pellets before and after lambing. They also feed high quality local hay to the sheep in the winter. No animal by-product feed, hormones, or antibiotics used. In the summer, the sheep rotate through the pastures and the chickens follow in mobile coops, fertilizing the pasture and breaking up the parasite cycle in the sheep. They offer raw sheep milk at $5/quart or $9/half gallon. They offer eggs for $5/dozen. Delivery into Asheville or Marshall upon request. You are also welcome to come out to the farm to pick up milk. Call for availability of the milk and/or to order. See other places where you can find products from this farm.

Farmer's statement about their cows and their management: "We have two incredible cows in milk! We have our registered Jersey, Rosie, and our registered Normande, Lucy. Both breeds give us a high percentage of delightful cream. Also on our farm are three other cows. Two are expecting their first calves (Felicity & Maple) and one we are hoping will get pregnant in the near future.
"We have not given our cows any antibiotics, growth hormones or fed them any animal by-products. The milk is sweet and nutrient dense. The cows are fed grass and hay all day, every day. We also use high quality grain. For Rosie, a Jersey, it is so her body is kept in condition. Rosie is given organic oats, organic barley, organic kelp which we then ferment all together for further nutritional uptake for her. She also has access to Redmond minerals. Lucy is new to us, so she is given a treat like the above because she sure is motivated with that! She was not milked by people before we got her in July, and she is doing wonderfully with us.
"A little Cow 101, if a cow is not bred specifically for a grass-only diet, as is the case with many Jerseys in the US today, the cow can suffer incredibly physically. While grass only seems like a fantastic idea, we will not knowingly stress Rosie's body out. While in milk, many Jerseys have been bred so that their intake of grass and hay only produces more milk instead of nourishing their bodies. We work hard to ensure our Jerseys are healthy and strong and have what they need so as not to lose body condition while they are working so hard to give milk to us.
