A herd share (also known as a cow or goat share) is the purchase of ownership of a portion, or share, of a milking herd or individual milking animal.
A consumer first buys a share of the animal or herd through a legal bill of sale. They then enter into a boarding agreement with the farmer, paying the farmer a (typically monthly) fee to house, care for, and milk their animal. The boarding agreement fee covers costs of feed, maintenance, time, labor, equipment depreciation, etc. This fee is not a charge for the milk. The boarding fee must be paid regardless of variations in milk production; and even if a herd share owner is out of town for a few weeks, they still pay the boarding fee even though they aren’t getting their milk while they are away.
The farmer provides the consumer with their share of the milk produced at no additional expense – because it’s not a sale of the milk; it’s that consumer’s milk already. The consumer pays costs, and receives milk, in proportion to their ownership interest.

Farmer's statement:
"Jersey milk just tastes better! The reason?? Jersey milk naturally contains a 20% higher amount of butterfat than other breeds' milk. Butterfat = flavor! Products such as milk, butter and ice cream made from Jersey milk will naturally have a creamier, richer flavor.
"Compared to average milk, a glass of Jersey milk has greater nutritional value: 15% to 20% more protein, 15% to 18% more calcium, and 10% to 12% more phosphorous, and also considerably higher levels of an essential vitamin, B12. Whereas other breeds may produce a higher quantity of milk, the Jersey breed by far produces higher quality milk."
Small family dairy presently milking approximately 150 Jersey cows, 20 of which are qualified for raw (unpasteurized) milk sales. Cows are pastured (not confined) and have never been given rBST or rBGH. They receive nominal amounts of feed concentrate twice daily while being milked. The remainder of their diet consists of grazing and seasonal forages harvested locally and baled and/or ensiled. They welcome visitors and are glad to discuss operations with anyone interested.
